Lakeshore Parrothead Club, Pirates for a Cause
One look at the wooden pirate ship and its pirate crew, and you might think you're in another time or place. But it's 2011, and you've just come face to face with the Lakeshore Parrothead Club from Ludington, Michigan. They are a charter club under the parent club of Parrot Heads in Paradise, created to promote friendship and organize social activities for people with similar interests. This of course, includes the enjoyment of Jimmy Buffett's tropical music!
The Lakeshore Parrothead Club was formed in 2002 by Don and Deb Harris from Baldwin, and is now run by Tom and Phil Riggs, along with their wives. With chapters all over the world, the club is mandated by the charter to conduct charitable events in the community throughout the year. Their motto is "Party with a Purpose," and that's exactly what they do—have a good time while helping others. Anyone who's heard the "BOOM" from their ship cannon is keenly aware the pirates are nearby.
The Alzheimer's Association is a regular part of their fund raising activities. Other worthy causes include the American Cancer Society, the Andre Bosse "Kid’s House," and Catholic Social Services. You'll see their pirate ship, the "Adventure," in the July 4th and Christmas Parades, at Movies in the Park, the Alzheimer's Memory Walk, and at Friday Night Live. They even hold their annual New Year's Day party right on the snowy and frigid ground at Stearns Beach.
The Lakeshore Parrothead Club is open to anyone with the tropical spirit and the desire to contribute to the community. If you're interested in joining this unique and fun group of pirates, send an email to lakeshoreparrotheadclub@gmail.com, or write them at P.O. Box 484, Ludington, MI 49431.
